The sun setting on Pier 54 as the buildings suddenly started to glow in the dusk was the perfect environment to take in such emotional, heart-wrenching songs. The pain in Peter Silberman’s voice echoed around the crowd as some swayed and some just stood transfixed. The set was very moving and even refreshing compared to all the revival bands that are popping up these days. This music is coming from a place of experience and hurt, rather than a collage or homage to musical heros. Both approaches can be great and fun, but I’m sure you can guess which will stick with you longer.
The Antlers are heading off on tour next month, stopping in select cities. This was their only show in NY. Check them out while they’re in your city. In the meantime, you can listen to them here: http://www.myspace.com/theantlers
